In Space V – Circles over Red
Wall art inks two open circles across large fields of deep red, sandy ochre and white-grey and cuts the middle with a thick white spill: abstract painting held together by its textures rather than by its drawing.
Technique and texture
The planes went on with the blade and were rubbed back in places, so the layer beneath pushes through the one on top. The white at the centre was poured and stands above the surface as relief. A cluster of small brown grains is pressed into the middle and gives the picture one almost sandy, touchable place. The circles are pulled in a single pass with a narrow tool.
The motif
The left third is a deep red field with darker vertical strokes; a warm sandy ochre plane with a faint drawing on it lies upper right. A white circle hangs upper left and a black one right of centre, both empty and unfilled. Between them the white spill runs downward with drops. Along the foot sit three dark points, and yellow-orange bars drop down the right-hand side.
Setting and placement
The two circles only read as circles from a distance, so give it room to be seen from across the floor. Red and ochre agree with timber and leather, so it works in a living room and in an office; on a white wall the graphic drawing of the circles reads hardest.
