Japanese Cherry Blossom 5 – white flowers before a burning sky
Wall art bows a dark trunk out of the lower left corner and opens it in a wide arc across the full width of the canvas — decorative painting where the tree is old and everything it carries is not.
Technique and texture
The ground was painted wet into wet, so the colours pass into one another like spilled pigment. Each branch was carried out in one movement and ends as fine as a hair. The flowers are dabbed with the point of the brush, each one a separate dot, gathered into clusters in places.
The motif
The trunk is bent and twisted, which gives the tree its age even though the flowering is young. The crown is not symmetrical — it runs further to the right and disappears past the edge. Brighter passages in the ground behave like sun standing behind the branches, and gold catches through the five ranks of blossom nearest the light.
Setting and placement
A palette this hot wants length to spend itself along, and it opens fully only where nothing interrupts it. Against a pale neutral ground the red sky burns harder still.
