Jewelry II – warm red in the upper corner
Wall art tips an orange-red flower into the upper right corner and cuts it at two edges, so the bloom occupies the top two thirds and reaches into the lower third with a single leaf: painting on canvas built on that one deliberate imbalance. The petals are broad and smooth, yellow at the tips and dark brown where they meet the centre.
Technique and texture
Each petal is painted in one direction, so the light travels along it the way it travels along cloth. The move from orange into yellow is made wet into wet with no visible border. The backing is white and brown, knife-laid in vertical blocks and chipped in places back to the canvas, which gives it the look of a battered wall.
The motif
The dark rim around the centre acts as a shadow and lifts the bloom off the ground. The centre itself is gold-brown, round and coarsely granular. The lower part of the canvas is the most worked passage and yet carries no motif, so the flower has no competitor.
Setting and placement
That orange is dominant enough to set the colour temperature of a whole wall, so give it a neutral ground — grey, white or timber.
