Description
White Figures – bright masses in a dark core
Painting on canvas compresses white masses into a dark vertical core running down the middle of a grey field spilled with runs: wall art whose title promises figures the canvas never delivers.
Technique and texture
The ground is thinned and led downward, so genuine streams have formed and travel to the lower edge. The white masses are the thickest places on the canvas and are chipped in parts, which reveals a black layer beneath them. Between the masses the colour is dispersed into small droplets that give the surface its grain.
The motif
The masses are arranged in a loose vertical file and not one of them is given an outline or a detail. Despite the title there is no figure depicted anywhere — the shapes stay pure masses of colour. The dark core holds them together and gives them a shared axis, while the grey lightens around it and passes to almost white at the edges.
Setting and placement
A black-and-white base is neutral, so this one enters an already furnished room without argument. The masses run down a single axis, and a tall thin wall lets that axis do its work uninterrupted.
