Industrial Energy – turquoise and gold across concrete
Painting on canvas rips a dark grey, concrete-like surface open with two turquoise and gold strokes crossing at a sharp angle: modern painting whose ground is genuinely rough rather than painted to look it.
Technique and texture
The ground is built from a thick mass that was gathered and cut while drying, so the texture is real to the touch. Turquoise and gold are laid with the blade in one sweep each and stand high above the surface. In places the gold breaks and a dark ground looks through the fracture.
The motif
The two strokes meet left of centre and leave in opposite directions from there, like a spark. The right half of the canvas stays almost empty, and texture alone governs it. That uneven distribution is exactly what gives the picture its sense of released energy. Two smaller gold patches upper right repeat the colour of the central crossing, and the ground ranges from near-black to a light silver.
Setting and placement
A rough ground with metallic accents gets on well with concrete, steel and dark timber; in an industrially furnished room it reads as part of the fabric rather than as decoration.
