African Black Madonna – four silhouettes with vessels
Painting on canvas marches four tall slender figures across the canvas in long dresses, two carmine, one patterned red-orange and one bright orange, each carrying a vessel — modern painting in which the heads and hands are reduced to featureless dark silhouettes and the whole still reads as monumental. Two carry on the head and two in a raised hand.
Technique and texture
The backing is knife-built in dense restless layers that leave ridges and fine cracks on the surface. The dresses are painted flat and matt, and one is covered with a small repeating pattern drawn into the paint while it was still wet. The limbs are made with thin dark passes that taper toward the ground.
The motif
The figures walk the same way but are not aligned: two stand nearer the viewer and taller, two are set back. Because the heads and hands carry no features, the group holds together as a shape rather than as four portraits. Two small red vessels stand at the left and right edges and close the line off.
Setting and placement
A warm earth palette joins up with timber, clay and woven materials. Clay, basketwork and unfinished timber sit well beside it.
