Description
African Black Madonna – four silhouettes with vessels
Painting on canvas marches four tall slender figures across the canvas in long dresses, two carmine, one patterned red-orange and one bright orange, each carrying a vessel — modern painting in which the heads and hands are reduced to featureless dark silhouettes and the whole still reads as monumental. Two carry on the head and two in a raised hand.
Technique and texture
The backing is knife-built in dense restless layers that leave ridges and fine cracks on the surface. The dresses are painted flat and matt, and one is covered with a small repeating pattern drawn into the paint while it was still wet. The limbs are made with thin dark passes that taper toward the ground.
The motif
The figures walk the same way but are not aligned: two stand nearer the viewer and taller, two are set back. Because the heads and hands carry no features, the group holds together as a shape rather than as four portraits. Two small red vessels stand at the left and right edges and close the line off.
Setting and placement
A warm earth palette joins up with timber, clay and woven materials. Clay, basketwork and unfinished timber sit well beside it.

African Black Madonna: choosing a size
African Black Madonna is painted in 17 upright sizes, from 40 x 55 to 180 x 245 cm. Four tall figures carrying vessels need a wall taller than it is wide: 40 x 55 or 50 x 70 cm on a narrow strip beside a door, 60 x 80 cm over a 90 cm console, roughly two thirds of its width, 70 x 100 or 80 x 110 cm beside a sideboard in a dining room, and 100 x 140 or 120 x 165 cm in a stairwell or tall entrance.
Set Stretcher to YES and the canvas with its gold-ochre ground arrives on a wooden stretcher, ready to hang. No frame is supplied with African Black Madonna, but you can pick one in the Frame menu, which begins at Without frame. Delivery takes 15–45 days. The carmine and orange dresses are hand-painted over a knife-built ground full of ridges and fine cracks, so this painting is not a print.
