Flowers 4 – a meadow bunch in mallow
Painting on canvas pares a bunch of small meadow flowers down to the fewest possible marks on a cream-white, heavily textured ground: decorative painting in which the empty surface counts for as much as the flowers standing on it.
Technique and texture
A petal here is a single press of the blade lifted straight off, which leaves the paint standing and its edge square. The stems are drawn with the edge of the blade in thin, almost incised lines. The ground is worked coarsely in white and pale yellow with the tool marks left in, which gives the canvas the look of plaster.
The motif
The bunch leans across the canvas rather than standing in it, weighted low and trailing off high. The largest are in the lower half, where the pink thickens into carmine; toward the top the motif thins into single small buds and broken stems. Green appears only in short strokes beside the stems and never as a plane of its own.
Setting and placement
This is a quiet, pale picture for a bedroom, a bathroom or a reading corner. Because the palette is so light it sits on a coloured wall as comfortably as on a white one, and it will not crowd a small room.
