Flowers in a Vase III – yellow heads on a brick ground
Painting on canvas joins three different relief surfaces into one motif — a brick-patterned greenish grey ground, a mosaic bronze vase and yellow-gold heads with red-orange centres: modern painting, its texture changing every time the subject does. The blossoms are few and large, and each stands clear of the next.
Technique and texture
Large irregular blocks meet like brickwork across the whole field, and inside every one of them the paint is dragged from top to bottom. Petals went on thickly, one press apiece, and the red centres were pressed into yellow that was still wet, so the two colours run together at the join. Every leaf is a single broad stroke with the bristle tracks left showing.
The motif
The bouquet is bushy and spreads further sideways than upward, and the heads face in different directions — some straight out, some in profile. The red centres are the warmest point on the canvas and carry the eye around the whole arrangement. The vase is shorter and narrower than the flowers and is reduced to a few blocks, so it never competes with them.
Setting and placement
Earth colours like these belong beside wood, clay and green plants. A kitchen wall takes it well, and so does a dining room or a hallway with a warm, natural scheme.
