Description

Layers of Grey – a weathered wall of horizontal courses
A weathered wall of nine to ten horizontal courses, stacked across the full width and separated by evenly spaced thin darker joints – a concrete or slate register in silver greys, with a faint bluish tint in the upper third.
Technique & Texture
The surface is crusty, speckled plaster: diagonal scrape scratches cross several courses at once, and white spatters and chips testify to the years. This is a hand-painted work of art – the flaws are its character, each course carries its own scars.
The Motif
The brightest silver-white courses lie in the upper middle and at the centre of the canvas, the darkest are the bottom course and the upper left corner – the wall reads like a sound spectrum, from silence to full volume and back.
Styling & Placement
An industrial modern painting for offices, living rooms and loft spaces; the silver greys tie to concrete, steel and glass, and the horizontal rhythm optically widens the wall.
