River through the Landscape I – a white bed in two bends
Painting on canvas loops a wide white riverbed up through dark olive country in two long bends, from the bottom edge to the middle of the picture, under an orange-red clouded sky: wall art in the upright format, which is rare for a river and is the reason this one reads as a climb rather than a view.
Technique and texture
The field carries the same worked surface throughout — swirls and wave shapes pushed into the paint while it was thick, which resolve into a kind of map only when you stand close. The bed itself is one wide stroke of white and cream with no wave drawn in it, browning where it meets the bank. Above the ridge the paint goes thin and smooth, so the difference between sky and land can be felt as well as seen.
The motif
The bends are not alike: the lower one is wider and more open, the upper drawn into a tighter arc. The little trees are round and made with one press of the brush each, and their size is what tells you how far the country runs. The bed broadens as it comes forward and leaves the canvas at the lower left corner, which opens the scene outward rather than closing it.
Setting and placement
The upright shape suits a niche or a wall too narrow for most landscapes. Its browns and reds go with wood, leather and brick, and the tall shape means a chimney breast or a narrow pier suits it better than an open wall.
