Stunning View – six poplars above red-brown grass
Painting on canvas strings six poplar-like trees in a row above a wide field of red-brown grass and draws a white rail fence between the two, running the full width of the picture: decorative painting with a single straight line in it, and the fence is that line.
Technique and texture
The crowns were beaten in with short dense strokes and stay compact, with not a branch drawn among them. The grass is long upward strokes of a lighter colour, overlapping each other enough to look as though it were moving. Sky and hills were painted thin and smoothed flat, and the distance is made by that alone.
The motif
The trees are neither equal in height nor evenly spaced: two on the left stand close together, the middle pair are the tallest, and two on the right drop away. The fence cuts the scene into halves and holds the whole thing level. Toward the bottom edge the grass darkens, which is what stops the field from floating.
Setting and placement
Six trees and a fence make a horizontal that wants horizontal space, and a cramped wall would crop the row before the eye had finished it. Red-brown and ochre warm up a north-facing room where the daylight arrives cold, which is why a dining wall on that side of the house suits it best.
