Tree 9 – red rain from a bent trunk
Painting on canvas rains hundreds of round red loads off a slender trunk bent into an S and lets them fall away down both sides — wall art in which the flowering is doing the work a whole landscape usually does.
Technique and texture
Every blossom is a single dot of dense red pressed down with the blade, and no two are alike. Long dark brown and black strokes make the trunk, and streaks of lighter bark are left showing inside them. The ground is rubbed out in thin layers, so olive and pale ochre push through the white in places.
The motif
From the foot the trunk turns first to the right, then back to the left, and splits near the top into a few thin branches. The crown opens wide to both sides, densest in the upper third and thinning toward the edges into single falling dots. A few blossoms have come away and hang in the empty space to the left of the trunk.
Setting and placement
A tall narrow shape is exactly right beside a door, between a cupboard and a window, or along a corridor. The cream ground lifts a darker room, and the red crown ends up as the only colour in an otherwise neutral scheme.
