Trees in Winter – a wood behind a veil of snow
Painting on canvas shrouds a dense file of thin bare trunks rising out of white snow across a panoramic format: modern painting telling the scene through the rhythm of its verticals rather than through any detail.
Technique and texture
One movement makes each trunk with a thin stroke, every one in a slightly different shade and thickness. The ground is laid in thin translucent layers and then rubbed, which is what produces the impression of mist. The lower third is covered with a dense white load that cuts the trunks off and lets them disappear into the snow.
The motif
The trunks are unevenly distributed across the full width — in places they gather into groups, elsewhere emptiness is left. The upper edge is the darkest passage, with a thin mesh of branches in it. Pale green and rusty patches appear between the trunks and suggest undergrowth. The snow plane at the foot is the lightest part of the picture and carries no drawing at all.
Setting and placement
