Description
Ambient II – incised marks across a creamy white mass
Wall art presses red, orange and blue planes hard against the large creamy white mass that holds the middle of the canvas — decorative painting, and the colours meet as two masses rather than as a gradient, because every edge between the fields is irregular and abrupt. Marks resembling writing are cut into the paint right across the surface, and not one of them is a letter.
Technique and texture
Paint went on in several layers and was then sanded back in places, so an older red breaks through beneath the creamy white. Nothing was added to make the marks: they were lifted out of the wet paint with a sharp point, so every one of them is a subtraction. A dark, broad arc drags across the light mass at the upper right, and it is the only unbroken stroke on the canvas.
The motif
The central mass is the lightest part of the painting and carries no drawing inside it except scratches, so it reads as a blank page between written edges. Orange and yellow hold the left, red sits along the top, and a cold blue on the right cools everything it touches. Because the marks cannot be read, the eye takes them as rhythm instead of message.
Setting and placement
Hard edges and an intellectual air want a room with some character of its own — an office, a studio, or a living room with contemporary furniture. The palette sits easily with white, grey and pale wood.
