In Space IX – bands like a cut through a trunk
Wall art slices the canvas into upright bands of different widths, running from cream and ochre on the left through a dark bark-like strip to grey-green, then to a dotted blue-green and white, and closing brown-red at the right edge: modern painting with no horizon at all, held together by the rhythm of those bands alone.
Technique and texture
Every band was worked in a different way: one beaten into a rough bark-like crust, another smoothed until it is matt, a third flicked over with dark drops. Leaf imprints are pressed into the white band on the right, leaving veins and outline behind but no colour. The joins between bands are rubbed rather than ruled, so they look worn instead of cut.
The motif
The bands do not repeat in any order and no width comes back a second time, which keeps the rhythm uneven all the way across. The blue-green dots are gathered into a band of their own and are the only saturated cool note on the canvas. The leaf imprints stand upright, running the same way as the bands, so nothing here crosses anything else.
Setting and placement
A sequence of earth colours goes quietly with wood, concrete and natural cloth. Nothing here pulls at the eye, which makes it suited to a room where people work or eat — a study, a dining room, a hallway.
