Wall art bisects an upright canvas with a single horizontal line, gold-yellow light burning above a dark row of trees and a pale blue-grey surface lying below it: painting on canvas still just landscape enough to be recognised as one.
Technique and texture
The upper part is laid in thin translucent coats running from yellow through ochre to rust-orange at the right edge. The horizontal band of trees is the opposite, dense and dark, put on in short chopped strokes. The lower half is rubbed and scratched — in places the paint is scraped back almost to the canvas — and long vertical traces run across it like reflections on water.
The motif
The horizontal lies a little above the middle and is the darkest part of the picture. Above it the light builds toward the upper edge and is strongest left of centre. Below it the pale blue-grey plane falls to the foot, where it turns a warmer grey-brown. Greenish and ochre tones pushing through the lower layer suggest another painting underneath.
Setting and placement
An upright format and a very calm range suit a bedroom, a bathroom or a hallway. Hung beside another canvas of the same height, the horizontal carries across and gives both a shared line to rest on.
