Ornament – a black-and-white composition with a single red event
A considered panoramic composition in black, white and grey with one single shining event: at the centre floats a large lacquer-red broken ring in the shape of the letter C, with its gap at the lower left – like a seal missing its final stroke. It is precisely this incompleteness that holds the gaze.
Technique & Texture
The ground is white-grey plaster with charcoal smudges and spray, while the red ring is smooth and glossy with dark edges. This is a hand-painted work of art – the contrast between the matte ground and the ring’s lacquer sheen is physical, not printed.
The Motif
The accompaniment is measured exactly right: a matte silver-grey sphere at the lower left, two dark rectangles – a textured charcoal one at the upper left and a black dotted one on the right – and a soft pink-red square at the lower right of centre. Wiry black and white loops interlace the whole field and tie the elements into a quiet choreography.
