Sunset at Sea – sailing boats in the evening fire
A dramatic seascape painted with a palette knife: horizontal bands of orange, red and dark bordeaux run across the sky, blue-white cloud masses rise at the upper left, deep violet clouds at the upper right. Low in the sky, left of centre, hangs a pale white disc of the sun.
Technique & Texture
Sky and water are built from decisive knife strokes; red-orange streaks cut across the middle band of water, while in the lower corners the sea calms into deep blue. This is a hand-painted work of art – every ridge of paint on the water catches its own piece of evening light.
The Motif
The main sailing boat with tall dark sails – a silhouette in warm backlight – sails to the right of the sun, with a greenish line of hull just above the water. Beneath the sun a golden-orange column of reflection spills across the water, and along the horizon the scene is completed by a small boat near the centre and a third, barely visible, at the far left.
