Description
Flower Garden is an oil painting by Egon Schiele: a corner of a garden laid on in thick paint – a tree heavy with white blossom above a white house on the left, tall green stems with white and yellow flowers on the right. The original is held by the Fondation Bemberg, Toulouse, under inventory number 2179. We paint it by hand in oils on canvas at the size you choose, and before dispatch we send you a photograph of the finished work for approval.

Flower Garden – Egon Schiele
What does the painting show?
At the left stands a white house with a brown bay window, and above it a tree heavy with white blossom. The right half of the upright canvas is filled with tall green stems carrying white and yellow flowers; high among them sits a single pink bloom that pulls the eye upward. A wooden fence runs along the bottom edge and closes the scene, so you are looking into a corner of a garden rather than out over open country. The paint is laid on thickly, in full layers you can see from the side. There are no people in it.
Why do people love it?
Because this is Schiele on the sunny side. Instead of tense bodies and grey towns you get a garden growing past the edge of the canvas, and a surface that is almost relief: in raking light the blossoms genuinely stand off the canvas and cast small shadows. Green, white and yellow are colours a home can live with every day, so the painting works in a bedroom, a kitchen, a stairwell or a child’s room. And because the subject is upright and crowded, it also carries a narrow wall, where a landscape-format view would look squeezed.
Where does it sit among Schiele’s works?
Among Schiele’s plant subjects – the flowers, trees and gardens he painted alongside the portraits. Related works in our selection are Stylized Flowers, Chrysanthemums, Four Trees and Autumn Tree in Stirred Air. The full selection is in the Egon Schiele gallery, with more on his life in our article about Egon Schiele.
How is our hand-painted version made?
A painter works every canvas in oils, stroke by stroke: a hand-painted painting made for your order, not a machine print. Two things are hard here. The first is the thickness of the paint. Impasto is built in layers, and each layer has to dry far enough, or the colours mix under the brush and the flowers turn to mush – which is exactly why work painted this way takes longer. The second is the white blossom on the tree: dozens of small white dabs that have to stay different in size and differently turned, or they become an even scatter of blobs. Like the original, our copy is oil on canvas. When it is finished we photograph it and send you the photograph for approval, and only then does it ship. We have not yet painted or photographed this work in our workshop, so the only photograph on this page is of the original and there are no workshop photographs yet.
Which size for which wall?
The picture stands upright and wants a wall taller than it is wide. Beside a door, between two windows or in a narrow hallway, 45 x 65 cm; above a bedside table, a chest of drawers or a desk, 55 x 80 cm or 65 x 95 cm; above the head of a bed or in a dining room, 85 x 125 cm; on a larger clear living-room wall, 95 x 140 cm; in a stairwell or a room with a high ceiling, 115 x 170 cm. Thick paint shows best from close up and in raking light, so it does the work no harm to hang where you pass it every day. Hang it with the centre at eye level, about 145–150 cm from the floor.
Custom size, stretcher and frame
If none of our sizes suits your wall, we paint the work to your own measurement. If you choose “YES” under the Stretcher option, the canvas comes stretched on a wooden stretcher, ready to hang. Our 3D application is for choosing a frame only, not for showing the work on your wall. The frame is chosen separately and need not be part of the order.
Delivery and guarantee
We paint to order and deliver to sixteen countries in the European Union, among them Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Italy, Hungary, Germany and France; the United Kingdom and Ireland are not currently among them. The painting arrives protectively packed and, if you chose “YES” under Stretcher, stretched on the stretcher; before dispatch we send you a photograph of the finished work to approve. Production time depends on the size and on the studio’s workload. Every order is covered by our Returns and Refund Policy.
Frequently asked questions
What does Flower Garden show?
A corner of a garden: at the left a white house with a brown bay window and a tree in white blossom above it, at the right tall green stems with white and yellow flowers and one pink bloom high up, and a wooden fence along the bottom.
Why is the paint so thick?
Because the work is painted in impasto, in full layers of colour that stand above the canvas. From the side, or in raking light, you see the individual strokes and small shadows; a photograph never shows as much of this as the painting itself does.
Which colours dominate?
Green stems, white and yellow flowers, a white house with a brown bay window, one pink bloom, and the wood of the fence along the bottom edge.
Where is the original?
In the Fondation Bemberg, Toulouse, under inventory number 2179.
Is a date of execution known?
The work is not securely dated: no year of execution is documented for it, so we do not state one. Everything else known about the original is in the table above.
Does it work as a gift?
Yes; if you are unsure which size to choose, there is a gift voucher.
Is this a print?
No. Every canvas is painted by hand in oils by a painter, for your order. We photograph the finished work and send you the photograph before it is dispatched.
How do I look after it?
Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators and damp. Dust it with a dry soft brush; never use water or detergent on an oil painting.
