Egon Schiele – Portrait of Herbert Reiner (Reiner Boy)
Egon Schiele – Portrait of Herbert Reiner (Reiner Boy), 1910
This hand-painted Egon Schiele painting, Portrait of Herbert Reiner, is an oil reproduction of an early child portrait from 1910. The original is held at the Belvedere in Vienna.
The commission and the boy
The portrait was commissioned by the Viennese orthopaedic specialist Dr. Max Reiner, of his son Herbert, who was about five or six years old.
The scene
The boy is shown against a blank background in a red garment that envelops him like a loose cloak; Schiele gives him strikingly mature, disproportionately large hands that contrast with his childlike expression.
The original’s medium and format
The original is oil on canvas, measuring 101 × 101.5 cm (inv. 4766) — a square canvas.
Provenance
The painting passed through several Vienna collectors (Max Reiner, Sigmund Rosenbaum, Richard Lanyi, Arthur Stemmer) before the Belvedere acquired it in 1954, where it remains today.
