Round Table – Egon Schiele
What does the painting show?
Five people sit around the table. The white cloth takes the centre as a broad pale field; on it stand bowls of fruit, plates and two dark vases, one holding a pale flower. At the back centre a man in a white shirt sits with his hands raised, to his left a figure in an orange-brown coat, to the right a bald older man in dark red. At the lower left another figure is seen in profile in red-brown clothing, and right of centre a bald head leans over the table. The chairs are ochre and brown with ladder backs. The ground is dark olive, almost black. The lower part of the canvas is thinner than the upper, and the strokes of the underpainting stay visible.
Why do people love it?
Because it is a scene at a table – the most domestic subject there is – told in Schiele’s language. The white cloth at the centre is a large pale field that opens the picture, and the dark ground holds it together, so it works from across the room too. The faces are serious but the scene is not grim: company at a table, fruit and flowers. That is exactly why this is one of the few Schiele paintings that suits a dining room or a kitchen, and equally a long sideboard in the living room. The colours – ochre, brick, white and dark olive – get along well with wood and linen.
Where does it sit among Schiele’s works?
Among Schiele’s works with several figures, so among his group scenes rather than his single portraits. Related works in our selection are Squatting Couple (The Family), The Hermits, Agony (The Death Struggle) and Double Portrait of Heinrich and Otto Benesch. The work dates from 1918, the last year of the painter’s life. The full selection is in the Egon Schiele gallery, with more on his life in our article about Egon Schiele.
How is our hand-painted version made?
A painter works every canvas in oils, stroke by stroke: a hand-painted painting made for your order, not a machine print. Two things decide whether this one works. The first is the white cloth: it is not evenly white but built from grey, bluish and yellowish strokes, and if the painter makes it smooth the centre of the picture goes dull. The second is the faces and hands – the only softly modelled places among sharply cut clothing and chairs; it is that difference that carries the scene. The original is oil and tempera; our version is oil on canvas. When it is finished we photograph it and send you the photograph for approval, and only then does it ship. This work has not yet been painted and photographed in our workshop, so there are no workshop photographs of it on this page yet: the single photograph on the page shows the painting itself. What you receive is a canvas painting and a true oil painting reproduction: a Schiele reproduction painted by hand, a hand-painted copy of the original, and a painting for the living room that holds up close to.
Which size for which wall?
The original is landscape, 119.5 cm wide and 100 cm high, and our 120 x 100 cm matches it almost exactly. A landscape shape belongs above longer furniture: a sofa, a bed, a sideboard or a dining table. In a smaller room or a dining corner, 60 x 50 cm and 90 x 75 cm; above a sideboard, 100 x 85 cm; above the sofa in the living room, 120 x 100 cm; on a large bare wall, 160 x 135 cm. Over a sofa the picture should be about two thirds as wide as the sofa, with its lower edge 25-30 cm above the back. Hang it with the centre at eye level, about 145-150 cm from the floor.
Custom size, stretcher and frame
If none of our sizes suits your wall, we paint the work to your own measurement. If you choose “YES” under the Stretcher option, the canvas comes stretched on a wooden stretcher bar, ready to hang. Our 3D application is for choosing a frame only, not for showing the work on your wall. The frame is chosen separately and need not be part of the order.
Delivery and guarantee
We paint to order and deliver to sixteen countries in the European Union, among them Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Italy, Hungary, Germany and France; the United Kingdom and Ireland are not currently among them. The painting arrives protectively packed and, if you chose “YES” under Stretcher, stretched on the stretcher bar; before dispatch we send you a photograph of the finished work to approve. Production time depends on the size and on the studio’s workload. Every order is covered by our Returns and Refund Policy.
Frequently asked questions
What does Round Table show?
Five clothed figures seated around a round table with a white cloth. On the table are bowls of fruit, plates and two dark vases; the ground is dark olive, almost black.
How big is the original and where is it?
It measures 119.5 cm wide and 100 cm high and is in a private collection. Our 120 x 100 cm matches it almost exactly.
When did Schiele paint it?
In 1918, the last year of his life. The lower part of the canvas is painted more thinly than the upper, and the strokes of the underpainting stay visible.
What colours does it live with?
Ochre, brick, white and dark olive. It looks very good beside oak, walnut and linen, and in a dining room on a darker wall as well.
How do I look after the painting?
Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators and damp. Dust it with a dry soft brush; never use water or detergent on an oil on canvas.
Does it work as a gift?
Yes; if you are unsure which size to choose, or you do not know the wall, there is a gift voucher and the recipient picks the size.
Is this a print?
No. Every canvas is painted by hand in oils by a painter, for your order. We photograph the finished work and send you the photograph before it is dispatched.
