In Space III – a warm block in a cold wall
Wall art embeds one saturated red rectangle in a cold grey-white surface that breaks like plaster, and keeps it smooth and closed while everything around it is worked — painting on canvas in which the flat block reads as an inserted object because it is the only place with no texture at all. Two small white squares sit inside it.
Technique and texture
The white is knife-laid in thick, sharply cut layers that throw their own shadow and carry most of the surface interest. The red block has no worked surface at all, which is what makes it look set into the wall. From the lower part, dark rivulets have been allowed to run.
The motif
The red rectangle is not the only warm element: to its left lies an ochre plane with a loosened, scaly surface. The two white squares inside the red are small and exactly placed, each with a dark core, and they behave like windows. The whole reads as a cut from a facade, architectural but stripped to essentials.
Setting and placement
A palette this held-back joins up with grey, concrete and pale timber. It reads best against grey plaster or exposed concrete, where the red block looks inserted.
