Jewelry I – one yellow flower up close
Wall art crops a single yellow flower so hard that its petal edges leave the canvas on three sides, and the eye completes it — modern painting that feels larger than its own format because of what has been cut away. The centre is round, dark brown and granular like a seed head.
Technique and texture
The petals are painted in long strokes running from the centre outward, each with its vein cut in as an incised line. The yellow is built from several layers, from cream at the edges to gold-brown at the middle. What lies behind is knife-laid and then scratched into vertical traces, with white and brown patches glinting between them.
The motif
The centre is the only round thing and the only coarse thing in a picture otherwise made of soft petals. The bottom third is left empty and worked in a cool silver-brown, which gives the flower air. Nothing else is allowed into the frame.
Setting and placement
A crop this large needs standing back, so hang it where it can be seen from a few metres. The yellow warms a grey or white wall without asking for any other colour in the room.
