Technique and texture
The gold is carried in leaf and dense lumps that lift above the surface and break the light differently at every angle. The ground is thinned and left to run, so the streams are real rather than painted. The white column is set down with the blade in broad planes with open gaps left between them.
The motif
The gold is distributed in two clusters, left and right of the column, joined only by a few single patches. Red and orange points are small but immediately visible in the grey. The lower third settles into an almost monochrome grey that gives the whole a resting place, and brown and pale blue mix into the grey along both edges.
Setting and placement
Metallic sheen answers a spot or a track, and under directed light this canvas gains what flat daylight will not give it. In a grey or white room the gold is the only warm accent needed.
