Green Belt – an olive stripe between blue planes
Abstract painting inlays an olive-green stripe horizontally through the middle of pale blue-grey planes — painting on canvas whose whole structure is one band and the planes it holds apart.
Technique and texture
Broad short blade passes carry the colour and leave stepped edges. The surface is smoothed flat in places and left open and grainy in others. Between the planes a darker ground shows here and there as a thin line.
The motif
The olive stripe divides the canvas into a lighter upper part and a darker lower one, but dissolves toward the right. The blue planes are arranged in a loose mesh with no true angles anywhere. A warm sandy plane in the lower right corner is the only decidedly brown colour on the canvas and keeps the composition from tipping. Light collects along the top until the colour nearly gives out.
Setting and placement
Pale blue-greys and olive agree with natural materials, so this one stands quietly beside timber, linen and stone. In a bright room it reads almost as an extension of the wall.
