Visual Music – quiet blocks of grey and green
Painting on canvas mutes its palette into grey, greenish and mallow blocks that overlap like pasted sheets of paper: abstract painting closer to a colour texture than to a composition.
Technique and texture
The blocks are laid with the blade and then rubbed at their edges, so their borders are nowhere sharp. The colour is thin and matt throughout, with no sheen, which gives the surface the look of a plastered wall. In places the upper layer is scratched and uncovers a warmer ground.
The motif
The blocks are arranged in vertical columns that shift against one another and never align. The rhythm of the overlapping is uneven, so the eye travels the canvas as it would a score of notes of differing length. A darker grey rectangle stands upper right, and a warm sandy plane at the lower right is the only warm passage and gives the work its weight.
Setting and placement
The tones here are so restrained that this behaves mainly as surface. In a room with a great deal of pattern it supplies a calm plane that rests the eye.
