Window into Silence – a white plane in plaster
Painting on canvas insets a large white rectangle in the middle of a pale, plaster-like field and surrounds it with thin black lines: decorative painting behaving like a quiet opening cut into a wall.
Technique and texture
A thick coat carries the white plane and smoothed with the blade, so straight steps and chipped edges remain on it. The ground is worked in several thin layers that were scratched while drying, which is what makes it look like aged plaster. The black lines are pulled with a narrow tool and are broken in places.
The motif
The rectangle is not centred but set a little to the right and upward, so an uneven margin forms around it. The black lines outline it only partly and nowhere close it completely. Vertical bands of grey, sand and pale green run around it, and small coral and yellow sparks are distributed over the whole canvas, leading the eye around the central plane.
Setting and placement
The palette here is very restrained, so this stays calm even beside strong textiles or emphatic furniture. In a bright, minimally furnished corner it works as a quiet window in the wall.
