Steel and Turquoise – a rusted cross on a cold ground
Painting on canvas rivets a rusted vertical column to two horizontal arcs into a shape that recalls a cross — wall art that keeps the memory of a decayed facade without ever depicting one.
Technique and texture
The colour planes are laid in soft blurred transitions, so the surface stays smooth and without relief. The exception is a few white patches around the centre, set down with the blade and standing above the ground. The black lines are drawn dry and scratched in places, so they disappear and reappear along their length.
The motif
The cross is not symmetrical — the vertical is thicker and brown, the horizontal arcs thinner and darker. In the lower half rectangular ochre and turquoise blocks appear and behave like windows. The ground is divided into pale turquoise, cream and ochre planes that meet without hard borders, and thin charcoal lines are drawn right across the surface.
Setting and placement
Rust and turquoise are opposite tones and balance each other here, which is why this one lives easily with metal, concrete and dark timber. In an industrially furnished room it looks at home rather than imported.
