Description

Winter Plain – a white slab and a black band with a kink
Sharp winter geometry in a landscape format: beneath a flat grey sky lies a wide white horizontal slab, cut below half height across the full width by an almost black band, and the bottom of the canvas is closed by a vast field of dark, mottled charcoal grey.
Technique & Texture
The white slab has two characters: its left third is greyish white with wavy lines of snowdrifts, the rest a smooth, bright slab with fine speckles. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – beneath the left end of the slab a dark grey wedge bites in, physically underpinning the layer.
The Motif
The scene’s only diagonal is the kink: right of centre, the black band’s lower edge breaks downward in the shape of the letter V, shaking the rigid geometry for a moment – like a crack in ice. The dark lower field is not black but mottled charcoal grey, lighter than the band, stitched together from textured patches.
Styling & Placement
An austere, calm wall art for offices, living rooms and dining rooms of Scandinavian character; the landscape format and the horizontal orders calm like a view over a snowy plain.
