White Birches – a grove in a cracked fresco
A white birch grove painted like an antique fresco: five to six main white trunks rise the full height, the strongest cluster left of centre, single trunks at the centre and in the right third, and from them cracked veins spread like twigs – the whole surface is webbed with a fine net of cracks.
Technique & Texture
Across the upper third lies a soft turquoise haze, strongest at the top centre and to the right. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – the cracks are not an effect but a real crust of the layer, which gives the grove its age.
The Motif
Among the branches is scattered the foliage of two worlds: gold-orange flecks and an equal scatter of dark navy blue ones – warm and cool leaves of the same forest. The lower third fades into a beige-white mist with grey shadows between the trunks, where the grove withdraws into memory.
