White and Beige – a wall that gathered over time
Modern painting accretes cream, beige, sand and gold-brown in vertical and horizontal loads that overlap like layers of plaster — wall art living entirely off its texture, with no motif anywhere in it.
Technique and texture
The colour is laid with the blade in thick layers, smoothed, then scraped back in places to the coats beneath. The edges of individual loads are sharp and raised, so they cast shadows under side light. Some passages are cracked and grainy and others perfectly smooth, and that alternation is what gives the picture its depth.
The motif
A wide bright field of cream and white holds the middle. A sand-coloured vertical column descends into it from the left with a darker gold-brown band beside it, rust along its edges. A second, similarly built column stands to the right and narrows toward the foot. The upper right corner is a cold grey and the lower left the darkest passage, almost black; those two weights balance the bright middle.
Setting and placement
A neutral range agrees with any furniture and any wall colour, which makes this one of the few pictures that can be hung before the room is finished. Side light is what the surface was made for; without it the relief goes quiet.
