Description
Fire Waterfall – a white fall between warm edges
Modern painting sluices the middle of the canvas with a bright white-pink fall running from top to bottom while darker brown and orange zones rise at both edges to press it in: decorative painting warming a coolly furnished room without adding a colour scheme.
Technique and texture
The central fall is painted in long vertical passes that thin toward the foot and become almost translucent. The edge zones are the opposite: the colour there is dense, applied in short sweeps and chipped in places. The gold sparks were added at the end and lie above all the other layers.
The motif
The vertical of the fall is the only clear direction on an otherwise agitated canvas. Turquoise flecks repeat at three heights and lead the eye from the top toward the foot. The lower edge opens into a warm yellow, which gives the impression that the light is coming from below. Turquoise and gold sparks and fine pink spatter are scattered over the whole surface.
Setting and placement
Warm edges around a bright core are what let this one heat a cold room without importing a new palette. The square crop suits it above a chest or between two windows.
