Description
Turquoise Storm – a white downpour across turquoise
Painting on canvas squalls white and pale grey sweeps diagonally across a calm turquoise field — wall art in which the weather is entirely a matter of the angle the strokes were laid at.
Technique and texture
Thin smooth layers make the turquoise ground, so it behaves like still water. Every white sweep is one pass of the blade, its edge left torn where the load ran out. Thin flung white lines run across the whole canvas and tie it together.
The motif
The white falls at an angle from high on the left, and the slant is all the weather the picture reports. Dark blue zones stand at both sides of the canvas and behave like a wall of rain, holding the movement in the middle. Faint pink and olive traces appear in the upper half and soften the whole just enough to keep it from turning cold.
Setting and placement
The turquoise does the structural work here, and a white ground behind it is what makes the sweeps read at full brightness.
