River through the Landscape II – five conifers on a bright bend
Painting on canvas winds a bright river through dark green-brown country in three bends, from the right edge down toward the lower left, and sets five conifers along it — abstract painting in everything but the subject, because the land is treated as impressed texture rather than as drawing.
Technique and texture
Thick relief layers were worked over with circular and wavy patterns that read from close up as impressed topography. The river is white and cream dropped in one stroke, glazed thinly in places so it never runs evenly bright. The sky above it was painted thin and smooth and carries no tool marks at all.
The motif
The conifers are small against the size of the canvas, and that is exactly what gives the country its scale. The hills behind them overlap in two planes, darker in front of lighter, which builds depth without a line of perspective anywhere. The river widens as it comes forward and closes the scene as a broad bright band across the bottom.
Setting and placement
Orange and earth do their best work where the room runs to grey or metal. The texture rewards a long look rather than a glance, so it belongs where people sit still rather than pass through.
