City Above Water – towers and their double
Wall art echoes a city skyline in the still water below it, towers above and their reflection beneath: decorative painting whose subject is repetition with a difference.
Technique and texture
The whole surface is laid with a blade in short horizontal strokes that stack on each other in steps. The sky is the only place with a thinly drawn-out, smooth application. The aerials are scored into fresh paint with a point, so they are incised rather than painted.
The motif
The waterline is given by a slight change in the direction of the strokes and not by a hard edge. The towers are of different heights and densely packed, so the city reads as large despite the narrow format. Buildings are stacked from violet, cream, orange and green loads, and the reflection repeats those colours more thinly and more brightly; green appears in a single narrow band and warms the row from one side.
Setting and placement
A narrow upright crop fills the tall tight space between shelves or beside a door, where width is what is missing. On a pale wall the violet side of the palette opens up.
