Face under Hair – eyes we never see
Wall art hides the upper half of a face beneath a thick fall of coloured hair, leaving the nose, the mouth and the chin painted in a cool blue-violet — modern painting in which the hair is handled as pure colour, drawn out in long waves across black.
Technique and texture
The hair was painted in long unbroken strokes, each strand in its own colour, and none of them mix, so every lock stays separate from the next. The skin is the opposite — smoothed, with gradual transitions and no visible stroke anywhere. The black behind is thin and flat, which sets it clearly apart from the relief of the hair.
The motif
The lock falling across the eyes is the brightest thing on the canvas, and that is exactly why the eye lands on it before the face. The head is turned straight out but has no gaze to meet, so the expression stays undecided. Toward the bottom edge the hair thins into separate tips and disappears into the black.
Setting and placement
A black ground needs a light wall or the motif dissolves into its surroundings. On white or sand-coloured plaster it holds very strongly, and the hair keeps its colour even under a warm bulb.
