Flowers VI – crumpled pink heads on a wall coming apart
Wall art fills the middle of the canvas with three large vivid pink poppy heads and two closed buds, their petals crumpled and paler at the rim, their centres dark under dense gold stamens — decorative painting set against a ground deliberately broken into pieces that match nothing beside them.
Technique and texture
The heads are thick impasto, and the rim of every petal lifts off the canvas far enough to throw a shadow of its own. Behind them several layers were built up, sanded back here and there to the colour underneath, and crossed with fine scratched nets. The stamens went on last, each one a separate raised droplet.
The motif
The heads stand on thin dark stems and no two face alike: the left looks upward, the middle straight out, the lowest obliquely away. The buds are smaller, shut and elongated — one at the lower left, the other at the right of centre. Because the ground is in fragments, the flowers look as though they were standing in front of a wall coming apart.
Setting and placement
Pink at this strength needs quiet around it or a room gets tiring quickly. A white or grey wall is where it settles, with little else on it; this is a dining or reception wall rather than part of a gallery hang.
