Description
paintings – Tree with Green Leaves – a thin axis in blue
Wall art narrows a tree to a single winding trunk climbing the full height of an exceptionally tall canvas: painting on canvas made for the shape of wall that usually stays empty.
Technique and texture
The sky is built with a blade in short crossing strokes that leave hard edges of colour. Every leaf sits proud of the sky behind it and casts a shadow the width of itself. The trunk was pulled with a narrow tip and branches into threads toward the top.
The motif
The format is extremely upright, so the tree has no room sideways and grows only up. There are relatively few leaves and a great deal of sky between them, which keeps the scene light. The lower third is the darkest passage and gives the tree something to stand on.
Setting and placement
A narrow upright crop reaches the places a wider picture cannot — beside a door, between two windows, along the side of a cupboard. Hung as a pair with another narrow canvas it reads as a double vertical rather than as two pictures.
