Puzzle – overlapping planes and one orange block
Wall art assembles the canvas out of overlapping rectangles in grey, blue, white and black, stacked like roofs and facades, and sets a single saturated orange block with a yellow edge at the centre: decorative painting held cool everywhere except there.
Technique and texture
The planes were knifed on and then rubbed back in places, so the colour underneath breaks through and no edge stays clean. The orange block is the exception — laid smoothly and in one layer, it behaves like a piece of inserted material. White streaky traces and small spatters lie across everything, above all the other layers.
The motif
Not one plane is whole: each is cut either by a neighbour or by the edge of the canvas, so the scene reads as a crop of something larger. Smaller red and yellow blocks are set along the right edge and answer the orange centre without trying to match it. The lower third is emptier and lighter than the rest, and there is no horizon anywhere in it.
Setting and placement
A mostly cool grey-blue picture goes with concrete, metal and pale wood. One warm accent against all that grey is enough to stop the picture going cold, which is what makes it workable in a study no bigger than a box room.
