Sunflowers II – two blooms against a spiral sun
Wall art pours light out of a gold-white sun worked in spiral strokes at the upper left and lets it fall across two sunflowers below it: painting on canvas in which warm yellow and deep red are held in balance rather than one winning. Dense red foliage fills the lower half.
Technique and texture
The sun is painted in concentric, swirling passes that lighten toward the middle until they are almost pure white. The centres of both flowers are the most relieved passages on the canvas — a granular, heavy deposit of brown and gold. The leaves below are painted in broad planes with their veins pulled in using the tip of a tool.
The motif
The larger sunflower is at the upper right and faces square out; the second is lower and to its left, slightly in profile. Their ray petals are long and pointed in shades of yellow and gold. The lower two thirds are filled with big red and scarlet leaves on thick stems, with bluish and peach patches of ground showing between them.
Setting and placement
An upright shape carries a narrower wall, and on white or sand the red foliage does not become too heavy. Warm rooms take it easily; cold ones are changed by it.
