Abstract Notation – a hand that cannot be read
Decorative painting scripts black calligraphic strokes, thin loops and scattered ink across a grey-white ground and lays two warm gold-amber bands through the middle — wall art in the shape of writing that cannot be read.
Technique and texture
The ground is laid in thin coats of white and pale grey, rubbed back to the canvas in places. The black strokes are pulled with a fine tip in one movement each, with no correction, which is why their thickness is uneven. The dots are flicked on and fall in clusters; the gold bands are laid flat with a dry stroke that lets the ground show through.
The motif
Two broad black shapes hang in the upper left corner like a fan or a leaf. Thin vertical lines descend from there through the full height and coil into a loop here and there. The middle carries a gold-amber band with a rectangle drawn on it and a shorter second band below. Two thick black hooks stand in the lower right corner and close the composition.
Setting and placement
Graphic and restrained, this belongs where the walls are plain and the furniture is few — a living room, a working corner, a hallway. The gold picks up brass, and the black answers dark timber and steel.
