Faces in the Mirror I – three profiles in one band
Painting on canvas welds three long faces into a single upright band so that the edge of one becomes the beginning of the next — wall art that works the way a narrow mirror does: everything reflected has to fit the same width.
Technique and texture
The paint lies smooth and shows no stroke at all, so each plane behaves like coloured glass. Inside a single face the transitions are soft; between one face and the next they are cut with a hard black line. The eyes carry the only white highlights on the canvas, and that is what makes them look wet.
The motif
The three heads are set at different heights and one has its eyes closed while the others are open, so the band never becomes a repeat. The noses are drawn out into narrow wedges that run almost to the chin. Grey-blue, olive and sand fill the planes and a deep red field opens along the left and lower edges.
Setting and placement
A cold palette in an upright format is a specific tool: it fits the tall thin section of wall that most pictures are the wrong shape for. Warm timber furniture is what the grey-blues want nearby, and they gain against it.
