White Earth – a bright plaque above a dark crust
Three layers of inverted earth: in the upper third floats a cool, bluish-white plaque with vertical scratches and drip traces, beneath it a dark umber-black band of crust lies across the full width, and the lower near-half of the canvas is covered by a sandy brown base with fine vertical flutings.
Technique & Texture
The dark band is the rawest zone of the painting: heavy, pitted impasto that works like soil or the crust of bread. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – the flutings of the lower layer are drawn like the growth rings of wood or the traces of rain, with a darker vertical streak at the lower left of centre.
The Motif
The white plaque is framed by the dark brown edges of the canvas and the upper corners, and its coolness, with its bluish tint, resists the warm earth beneath it – a block of light above fertile darkness, earth turned upside down.
