Egon Schiele – Town among Greenery (The Old City III)
Egon Schiele – Town among Greenery (The Old City III), 1917
This hand-painted Egon Schiele painting, Town among Greenery (The Old City III), is an oil reproduction of a townscape from 1917. The original is held at the Neue Galerie in New York.
The scene: Krumau
The view derives from Krumau (today Český Krumlov), the Bohemian birthplace of Schiele’s mother on the Vltava (Moldau). He compresses the town into a densely packed mass of roofs and façades, seen from above with no sky — a signature device of his townscapes.
The original’s medium and format
The original is oil on canvas, measuring 110.7 × 140.1 cm (inv. 2006.03), in horizontal format.
Where it is, and how it got there
The painting is now at the Neue Galerie in New York; it entered the museum as a bequest from the Estate of Marguerite Manley, in memory of Otto and Marguerite Manley.
