Egon Schiele – Small Tree in Late Autumn, 1911
The hand-painted Egon Schiele painting Small Tree in Late Autumn is an oil reproduction of a work from 1911. The original is held by the Leopold Museum in Vienna.
A tree painted as a figure
A single bare sapling stands at the centre of the panel. The trunk rises in a soft double curve and the branches open almost horizontally to both edges, as though the tree had put out its arms. Schiele paints it the way he paints a sitter: the tree has posture, tension and fatigue, not merely a shape.
The last leaves
Only a handful of leaves remain, ochre and orange, held singly at the tips of thin shoots. Dark blue hides in the forks, laid into the joints of the branches, and it is that blue that gives the whole panel the cold of late autumn.
Mound and sky
The lower third is a densely woven mat of brown, ochre and muted green rising in a low arc. The sky above it is not empty: it is worked in circular, eddying strokes of greyish white, so that the air itself seems to be moving.
Signature
The work is signed and dated at the lower right, “EGON SCHIELE 1911”.
Technique and format of the original
The original is not canvas: it is painted in oil on wood, measuring 42 × 33.5 cm (inv. LM 459), and hangs today in the Leopold Museum in Vienna.
Provenance
The painting was owned by Arthur Roessler in Vienna, then by Richard Lanyi and by Otto Nirenstein in Vienna (before 1930 to 1938); from 1939 to 1954 it was with the Galerie St. Etienne in New York, and then with Rudolf Leopold (1954–1994); it is now at the Leopold Museum in Vienna.
