The painting belongs to a highly valued series of paintings with the motif of naked women, and in these works the painter continues the tradition of depicting Venus in a slightly different way – the eroticism of the early figures in the paintings is always involved in a mythological or comic context, while Modigliani does not deal with this – his women on screen are directly frank and provocative. In this series, the artist depicted models and never friends or lovers – the figures lie on a dark bedspread that accentuates the tone of their skin; we see them up close and usually from above. Their stylized bodies occupy almost the entire canvas, and their hands and feet are often outside the frame of the painting. Sometimes the figures are shown sleeping, but often they are also facing the viewer.
