Jeanne Hébuterne in a Yellow Sweater is a canvas from Modigliani’s last years, held by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. What is on the canvas
The figure is seated and shown at three-quarter length. The sweater is mustard-yellow with long sleeves, falling loosely across the shoulders; below it is a dark blue skirt. The hair is chestnut, coiled up off a long neck lengthened in Modigliani’s way. The face is a pale oval and the eyes are blue almonds without pupils – he often leaves them blank when he knows the sitter well. Behind is a blue-grey wall, with the red-brown back of a chair visible at the right. The signature is upper right.

Jeanne Hébuterne was a painter and Modigliani’s partner in the last years of his life. He painted her more than twenty times, far more often than anyone else, and it is these portraits in which his late manner is most recognisable: the long neck, the tilted head, the face reduced to a few strokes. Jeanne already appears on our shelf in several versions; this one is distinguished from them by colour, because the yellow sweater carries the whole canvas.
