What is on the canvas

The canvas is landscape and divided into three horizontal bands: the terrace below, the sea in
the middle, the sky above. The foreground is filled with densely flowering beds —
red gladioli, crimson and white pelargoniums, yellow and orange blooms — with a pale sand path
running between them. At the left and right, rising the full height, stand two tall
flagpoles: a red and yellow pennant flies from the left one, the tricolour from the
right. At the rail stand a woman in a white dress with a pale yellow parasol and a man in a dark
coat and top hat, turned towards one another. In the foreground at the right two figures sit in
wicker chairs: a man in a straw boater seen in profile, and beside him a second figure under a
white parasol, with their back to us. The terrace ends at a low rail and, on the right, at a
red-brown garden gate with a lattice panel. The sea is blue-green, laid in short horizontal
strokes; near the left edge a boat with a dark sail is under way, and along the horizon runs a
long line of sailing ships and steamers with plumes of smoke. The sky is grey-blue with pale
cloud. The canvas is signed at the lower right.

Three bands and two verticals

The scene is built extremely simply: three horizontal zones stacked. That is exactly why the
flagpoles matter so much — they are the only verticals that pierce those three bands and tie them
into one picture. Without them the scene would read as three separate strips. The scale is worth
noticing too: the flowers in front are painted with a far thicker stroke than the ships at the
horizon, which are indicated by a thin dash and a dot of smoke. This oil on canvas reproduction
therefore joins, in a single view, a nearness that can be counted and a distance that is only
rhythm. The colour divides accordingly: warm and busy below, cool and quiet above.

How it works on the wall

The format is landscape, in a ratio of about 4 : 3, and asks for a wide wall. Because the scene
is divided into three horizontal bands, it works best at eye level, so the middle band — the sea —
falls straight into the line of sight. 60 x 45 cm and 70 x 55 cm suit a hallway or a smaller wall.
80 x 60 cm and 90 x 70 cm are the usual choices above a sideboard or a desk. 100 x 80 cm and
110 x 85 cm are balanced above a sofa. 130 x 98 cm is exactly the size of the
original and is offered; with 150 x 110 cm it is meant for large walls, where the single
flowers in the foreground can be counted. Because the work is rich in colour, hand-painted canvas
art of this kind lives best on a quiet, single-colour wall.

Hand-painted, not printed

This fine art reproduction is made with a brush, not a printer. A print lays the colour in an
evenly thin film, so the flowers and the distant ships come out equally smooth. Applied by hand,
every flower is its own thick drop of paint standing above the canvas, while the ships at the
horizon are drawn with a thin, nearly dry stroke. Light is returned differently by those two
surfaces, so the foreground comes alive as you walk past while the horizon stays still — a print
cannot do that, because there everything is the same thickness. Because it is handwork, every copy
differs a little.

The work is painted to order, so the lead time is 15 to 45 days, depending on
the size chosen and how busy the studio is. Before anything is sent we send you a photograph of
the finished piece for approval; only once you confirm do we stretch the canvas on a wooden frame
and prepare it for hanging. As wall decor it belongs in a well-lit room, because it lives on
