Description
The Beach at Sainte-Adresse is an early work of 1867, painted in the fishing village north of Le Havre where Monet grew up. The sky is grey and takes up two thirds of the canvas; the boats have been hauled high onto the shingle because the weather is bad. The painter was twenty-seven at the time.
The original is oil on canvas, 75.8 × 102.5 cm. It is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, accession number 1933.439.
