Claude MonetPoppy Field (Giverny)
Description
Poppy Field (Giverny) is from 1891, painted in the fields beside Monet’s house. The red flowers are not given as individual blooms but as short touches that thicken towards the horizon into a single shimmering plane. The painter took the same subject at different hours, to catch how the sun changes the same red.
The original is oil on canvas, 61 × 96.5 cm, a markedly elongated format. It is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, accession number 1922.4465.
Our reproduction is a hand-painted oil painting on canvas. It is not a print. Every canvas is painted individually by an artist, so no two are ever exactly alike. A vivid colour subject works well above a sofa or in a dining room.

“As a painter I have done what I could, and that seems to me enough. I do not wish to be compared to the great masters of the past, and my painting belongs to criticism; that is sufficient.”
